New Delhi: With a vote share of 42.88 per cent, the Congress party has created history by registering the largest vote share by any party in Karnataka assembly elections in the last 34 years. In the 2023 assembly elections, the results of which were announced on Saturday, the grand old party won 135 seats and secured 42.88 per cent vote share. This is being seen as the biggest victory of any party in Karnataka since 1989.
Congress secured 43.76% votes in 1989
Activist Yogendra Yadav took to Twitter and said that this is going to be the biggest win for “any party in Karnataka” in 34 years in terms of vote share and seats. Yadav claimed that it was during Virendra Patil’s rule in 1989 when the grand old party won 178 seats with a vote share of 43.76 per cent.
According to data posted by Yadav on Twitter, the Congress won 132 seats in Karnataka in 1999 with a vote share of 40.84 per cent. This was followed by the party’s second win with 122 seats and a vote share of 36.6 percent in 2013.
Similarly, in 1994, JDS won a total of 115 seats with a vote share of 33.54 per cent. In 2008, the BJP won 110 seats with a vote share of 36.86. Subsequently, in the 2018 assembly elections, the BJP won 104 seats with a vote share of 36.3. In 2004, BJP got a total of 79 seats with a vote share of 28.33.
A sitting government has not returned to power in Karnataka after a full term of five years since 1985 as no political party could win a mandate continuously in the state.
This last happened in 1985, when the Janata Party led by Ramakrishna Hegde came to power. Karnataka has had 23 chief ministers since 1952. Basavaraj Bommai served as the 23rd Chief Minister from 2021.
