In a surprising turn of events, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) suffered three bizarre run-outs against Mumbai Indians (MI) during an eliminator match of the 2023 Indian Premier League, leaving cricket pundits and commentators baffled. The match ended in an 81-run victory for MI, who advanced to Qualifier 2, while LSG were eliminated from the tournament.
The LSG had already faced challenges with their skipper KL Rahul being ousted midway through the season. However, he showed resilience and put up a fighting performance against MI. During the match, LSG were in a good position at 69/2, with skipper Krunal and Marcus Stoinis leading the rebuilding phase after the loss of two early wickets. Unfortunately, Pandya’s dismissal at 8 led to a catastrophic collapse for LSG, resulting in the fall of all the remaining wickets for just 32 runs. To compound their misery, three of those dismissed were run-outs.
The first run out proved to be the most crucial as it led to the dismissal of Stoinis, who was looking dangerous as he scored a 27-ball 40. Stoinis and Deepak Hooda completed the first run but collided while attempting the second. This momentary delay allowed fielder Tim David to throw the ball at the wicket-keeper’s end, where Ishan Kishan completed the run out comfortably. Commentators including Matthew Hayden expressed surprise, noting that such a run out was rare even in club cricket.
In the very next over, Krishnappa Gowtham almost gifted away his wicket. After playing the shot towards backward point, Gautam attempted a run when the ball slipped from the fielder’s grip. However, MI skipper Rohit Sharma recovered quickly, collected the ball and bowled a direct hit to run out Gautam.
The third and last run out happened in the 15th over when Deepak Hooda himself became the victim. Naveen-ul-Haq hit the ball to backward point, where fielder Cameron Green made a stop. Hooda initially conceded the run but changed his mind too late and Green’s throw to Rohit Sharma resulted in another run out.

Adding to the havoc of LSG, MI pacer Akash Madhwal put in a remarkable performance taking five wickets for just five runs in his 3.3 overs. His brilliant bowling helped LSG bundle out for just 101 runs.
Looking ahead, Mumbai will face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 for a chance to reach the final against Chennai Super Kings. Despite their disappointing exit, the fighting spirit of LSG throughout the season must be acknowledged, especially in the absence of their regular captain.
