A tearful Novak Djokovic addressed the crowd on Center Court after losing the Wimbledon championships to Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday night. Djokovic expressed his delight to see his son still smiling in the player’s box, despite the result. One of his children applauded in response, which made the Serbian cry. Djokovic managed to end his talk by saying “I love you”.

Carlos Alcaraz overcame a poor start to beat Novak Djokovic 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to end his 34-match winning streak at Wimbledon. An engaging, back-and-forth final on Sunday, claiming his first championship at the All England Club and second Grand Slam trophy overall.

No. 1-ranked Alcaraz stopped Djokovic from winning a record eighth and fifth consecutive title at the grass-court tournament. Djokovic was also prevented from winning the 24th major title of his career.

Instead of Serbia’s 36-year-old Djokovic, who became the oldest men’s champion at Wimbledon in the Open era, Spain’s 20-year-old Alcaraz became the third-youngest men’s champion. The age difference between the two was the largest in any men’s Slam final since 1974.

“Good morning everyone. Well not for me but well for Carlos. You deserve it,” the Serbian said after the loss.

Alcaraz also addressed Djokovic when it was time for him to speak: “You inspired me a lot. I started playing tennis watching you. You were already winning tournaments when I was born. It’s amazing.”
