Tom Cruise refuses to let ‘MI7’ end on cliffhanger

Los Angeles: The seventh installment of the ‘Mission Impossible’ franchise, ‘Dead Reckoning Part One’ has been a huge success, packed with action and several twists. However, director Christopher McQuarrie said that ‘MI7’ was of great concern to Tom Cruise and he completely ruled out the possibility of a cliffhanger ending, even to the point that the actor lost sleep over it. Due to which he kept refining it continuously.

Talking about the film’s train sequence, in an interview with Total Film, the director said: “We always ended the film where we were going to end it,” Variety reported.

“How we ended the movie was a big, big mystery to us. It kept Tom up at night during the whole production. He’d come up all the time and say, ‘This can’t be a cliffhanger, it has to be satisfying.’ ‘ The audience has to feel a sense of completion.”

McQuarrie continued, “Tom kept looking at that scene, and he worried about whether or not it would have a satisfying conclusion or whether it would feel open-ended. We constantly rewatched it, constantly refined it.”

McQuarrie told Total Film, “If you leave this with any doubt, it feels like we’re looking forward to you coming back.”

“We didn’t want that feeling. The feeling we were reaching for — and we hope you feel — is we’re challenging you not to come back. We want to leave you thinking, ‘Oh, I Can’t wait to see what happens next’,’ he added.
