Story of turning disability into merit: First amputee woman to climb Mount Everest after losing her leg in a train accident

She was a national level volleyball player who is now popularly known as ‘Mountain Mermaid’. Arunima Sinha lost her left leg in a traumatic incident but became the first amputee woman to climb Mount Everest.

Arunima Sinha was born in Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. His father was an engineer and his mother was a health supervisor. However, her father passed away when she was only 3 years old. Growing up in a challenging environment, she chose volleyball and went on to play at the national level.

However, he lost his left leg in a tragic accident. The incident dates back to 2011 when Sinha was traveling in a train and was attacked by local robbers who wanted to snatch his gold chain. Seeing her as a single woman, they attacked her considering her as an easy prey. But being an athlete, he fought back and gave them a tough challenge, eventually the robbers overpowered him and pushed him out of the train. She was hit by a train on another track and fell on an adjacent track and before she could remove her leg from the track, a train ran over her, crushing her left leg. Bleeding continued throughout the night in the middle of the track and in the morning the local people took him to the hospital. The doctors had to amputate his leg.

However, this failed to dampen Sinha’s spirit and he accepted the fate and decided to move forward and from this point, he started chasing his dreams. He decided to climb Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world and prove that physical limitations cannot stop someone who is passionate about his work.

Arunima Sinha had to go through rigorous training and faced many challenges including physical and mental. In 2013, she successfully climbed to the summit of Mount Everest, becoming the first female amputee to achieve this remarkable feat.

Arunima Sinha’s story became a symbol of courage and resilience, inspiring others to overcome their obstacles and pursue their dreams. After climbing Mount Everest, he continued to push boundaries and set new goals. She has climbed other major peaks around the world, further cementing her status as a mountaineer extraordinaire.

Arunima Sinha also founded a non-profit organization – Arunima Foundation – which supports people with disabilities and empowers them to pursue sports and educational opportunities. Their journey is a testimony to the power of the indomitable human spirit and determination.
