The Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem is heating up as we see another entry from ConsenSys, an already established player in the industry. ConsenSys, the company behind MetaMask, this week announced the launch of its layer-2 network – Linea – on the main Ethereum blockchain. It will soon start onboarding partners as well.
The new layer-2 scaling solution is a zkEVM rollup network that leverages zero-knowledge proofs, making it equivalent to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).
ConsenSys’ zkEVM Rollup Network – Linea
ConsenSys is the latest company to ride on the growing zkEVM trend with its new offering, Linea, which has already seen a successful testnet phase with over 46 million transactions conducted with 5.5 million unique wallets. According to the company, Linea has emerged as one of the largest and fastest growing projects in Goerli.
Linea will begin onboarding its launch partners this week, before coming to mainnet at ETHCC.
“Linea combines the power of zero-knowledge proofs with a full Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) counterpart, allowing builders to create scalable decentralized applications (dapps) or migrate existing applications without the hassle of changing code or rewriting smart contracts.” is allowed to do so.”
As announced by ConsenSys, the alpha release provides faster throughput while reducing transaction fees by up to 15x compared to Ethereum Layer-1. The firm also said that the release will allow for deeper integration with its crypto wallet MetaMask.
Linea will be made available to users next week, once partners have had a chance to onboard their dApps and infrastructure. The company also confirmed that the network uses Ether as its native currency, which is linked directly to the Ethereum mainnet. It urged users to be vigilant about fraudulent advertisements of an ongoing or impending LINEA token sale or decline.
zkEVM Popularity
A zkEVM is an EMV-compliant rollup secured by zero-knowledge proofs. By pooling in ZKPs with EVM compatibility, zkEVMs offer the security and privacy-preserving features of zk-rollup as well as enhance Ethereum interoperability by protecting EVM compatibility. Such a system helps zkEVMs to be interoperable with smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps) used on Ethereum.
The first zkEVM to be publicly available was zkSync’s solution called ‘zkSync Era’, which went live in March to much fanfare. A few days later, Polygon announced the final mainnet for its zkEVM product and added subsequent optimizations a month later.
