Top officials of all the cricket boards are currently in Durban, South Africa for the Annual General Meeting of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The newly appointed chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Zaka Ashraf and the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Jay Shah met on the sidelines of the ICC meeting in Durban on Tuesday.
A picture of Zaka Ashraf and Jay Shah soon went viral on social media with a report that the BCCI secretary is reportedly planning to visit Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023 tournament next month. The Asia Cup 2023 is being played in a ‘hybrid model’, with Pakistan hosting 4 matches before the tournament is shifted to Sri Lanka after the first four matches.
“PCB Management Committee Chairman Zaka Ashraf met BCCI Secretary Jay Shah in Durban, South Africa today and extended an invitation to him to visit Pakistan for the Asia Cup. Jay Shah accepted the invitation and in turn invited Zaka Ashraf to the opening ceremony of the 2023 World Cup in Ahmedabad. Zaka Ashraf has also accepted the invitation and he will travel to India ahead of the first match,” claimed Pakistan-based independent journalist Farid Khan.

However, both Jay Shah and BCCI treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal have denied any such plans of BCCI. Jay Shah, who is the son of India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, denied all reports that he would visit Pakistan and claimed that he had no such plans.
He said, “I do not agree on anything. This is just plain miscommunication. Possibly done intentionally or mischievously. Jay Shah was quoted as saying by the News18 website on Wednesday morning, “I will not do any tour.”
BCCI secretary Shah and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Zaka Ashraf met on the sidelines of the ongoing ICC meeting in Durban, where both discussed Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023.
Arun Singh Dhumal, the BCCI’s CEC representative at the ICC, has also denied that Shah or anyone from the BCCI will travel to Pakistan. Dhumal told News18 website, “Whatever reports are there, they are completely false.”
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Ehsan Mazari continued to demand India to play Asia Cup 2023 matches in Pakistan. “I asked Zaka Ashraf to persuade the ICC in its meeting in Durban to ask India to play their Asia Cup matches in Pakistan,” he said. If they don’t want to play here, we will also play our World Cup matches at a neutral venue. We will not play in India,” Dawn News quoted Ehsan Mazari as saying.
India is scheduled to take on Pakistan in an ODI World Cup 2023 match on 15 October at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
