Summary: A six-episode anthology, Modern Love Chennai is a sweet and heartwarming celebration of love, friendship and relationships, most of which are rooted in the city. It presents a bouquet of unique love stories set in the city of Chennai that push boundaries and open minds. Each episode is separate and has no links, meaning you can choose any one at random and watch. Nothing outstanding but offers a mix of tales of love and heartbreak.
musical connect

Margazhi is directed by Akshay Sundar and the story is adapted and written by Balaji Tharneethran. A heartwarming story, Margazzi is the story of two young children who meet each other in the choir class. The separation of their parents is what they share. The story starts off slow but will end up gripping you as the sweetness comes in a package of a beautiful, old fashioned love story. The message of the need to accept what is, what may be and what may never be, hit home. Nenjil Oru Minal is vibrant, peppy and will make you sing along while you imagine yourself – on a windy night, sitting on a beach. In the end a slice of life is all there is between them. The director sends out a powerful message in a beautiful way – love should not cross cultural differences.
embrace the flaws

Imaigal is directed by Balaji Sakthivel, and the story is adapted and written by Balaji Tharneethran. Featuring Ashok Selvan and TJ Bhanu, Imaigal is the story of a woman facing impending blindness, who one day confesses it to her man. He promises to love her regardless. Will their love last when life gets in the way? It is an intense story with strongly etched characters. Another love story that looks different but feels dry in pieces, though not forced. This story touches the heart.
feeling of being in love

Kadhal Enbadhu Kannula Heart Irukkura Emoji is directed by Krishnakumar Ramkumar and the story is adapted and written by Reshma Ghatala. Featuring Ritu Varma, Samyuktha Viswanathan, Pawan Alex and Aniruth Kanakarajan, the story is about a hopeless romantic, cinema-obsessed 90s kid. Ritu Varma having been a part of several feel-good romance films including OK Oka Jeevitham, and Pelli Choopulu, is another good addition. From school romance to a budding love story, Kaadhal Enbadhu Kannula Heart Irukkura emoji captures love and romance from a woman’s point of view. However, the story is dragged down by the simplistic writing. What really stands out and works here is the music composed by GV Prakash Kumar. The episode is filled with multiple plot points and romantic movie tropes.
Complicated

Ninaivo Oru Paravai is directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, and the story is adapted and written by Thiagarajan Kumararaja. The music is composed by maestro Ilaiyaraaja. Featuring Vamika Gabbi and PB, this episode is high on aesthetic work but lacks in provocative content. Ilaiyaraaja’s old classic, Ninaivo Oru Paarvai definitely brings a slice of happiness. However, the story here is a big conundrum.
there is no life without love

Paravai Kutil Vazhum Mangal, directed by Bharathiraja, is a story in a simple line, “Where, with whom and for whom do we fall in love?” The story of this episode is adapted and written by Pratip Kumar S, with music composed by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja. Featuring Kishore, Ramya Nambesan and Vijayalakshmi, the story is about a college professor and how she prepares to deal with a precarious situation and memories of meeting a married man emerge. Music is the heart and soul of this story. Ilaiyaraaja has fused a western symphonic with Indian music and vintage sensibilities. However, the story falls flat, is pretty drawn out and may test your moral compass towards the end.
love doesn’t need to be perfect

Lalagunda Bommigal is directed by Rajumurugan and the story is adapted and written by Rajumurugan, with music composed by Sean Roldan. Featuring Mr. Gowri Priya, Vasudevan Murali, and Vasundhara, the story is about a broken-hearted but quick-witted young butter-biscuit maker. A unique love story with rustic tunes and fun twists makes it a good watch. The climax and the ending shot add life to it. A lovely little film to watch!
On the whole, Modern Love Chennai is all about peppy, cherry blossom storylines with spellbinding performances by the lead actors. What doesn’t work, however, is that each episode seems a bit drawn out.
What works and is extraordinary is how each director has managed to break routine and try a new pattern. Talking about music, there is freshness in the rhythm.
