The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee, headed by new chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, announced the squad for the five T20 matches against the West Indies earlier this week. Some big names missing from the list were Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Uttar Pradesh batsman Rinku Singh and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Indian cricket fans were shocked by the non-selection of Rinku Singh especially after his sensational performance in IPL 2023. Gaikwad, who was CSK’s second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2023, was selected for the two-match Test series against the West Indies. the following week but was ignored for the T20I series.
However, there is some good news for both Rinku Singh and Ruturaj Gaikwad as according to a newspaper report, both the cricketers are set to be picked for the three-match T20I series against Ireland next month. According to the Indian Express newspaper, both Rinku Singh and Ruturaj Gaikwad will fly to Ireland for the three T20 matches to be held on August 18, 20 and 23.

The selectors are keen to try out a bigger pool of players keeping in mind the Asian Games 2023, which will also feature cricket this year. “Rinku and other players who have done well in IPL will fly to Ireland as the selection committee does not want to try everyone in one stage. The Indian Express newspaper quoted a BCCI source as saying, “There are seven players in the Indian ODI team who will not play the T20s because those players are important for us to move forward as they will play the Asia Cup at the end of August.”

According to reports, keeping in mind the Asian Games line-up, the selection committee has decided to try out players in a phase-by-phase manner. “The BCCI selection committee has asked the board to conduct more India ‘A’ tours and marginal players will be tried there before joining the senior Indian team. “The BCCI is in talks with a few boards for ‘A’ tours,” said the report.
The first selection meeting for the West Indies T20I series was attended by the chairman of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar. The selection committee picked Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Verma for the T20 squad.
Meanwhile, Rinku Singh was the highest run-scorer for KKR in IPL 2023 – scoring 474 runs in 14 matches at an average of 59.25 with 4 fifties and a strike-rate of 149.52.
