Bas de Leede’s brilliant maiden ODI hundred powered Netherlands into the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 with a dramatic four-wicket win over Scotland. At various points throughout the match, victory looked impossible for the Dutch, who knew they would need to chase down the target of 278 in just 44 overs due to Scotland’s superior net run-rate.
But De Leede was an inspired man from Bulawayo, who combined with Saqib Zulfiqar to score 40 off just 11 balls before Logan van Beek scored the winning run to seal qualification.
De Leede was impressive with bat and ball, taking a five-wicket haul in the first ODI and then scoring 123 with the bat to help the Netherlands win and book a ticket to India later this year. After putting Scotland into bat, the Netherlands got off to a bright start as Logan van Beek (1/49) dismissed Matthew Cross (0) in the very first over.
But Scotland steadied the ship through Christopher McBride (32) and Brandon McMullen (106), before opener McBride became the first of De Leede’s five wicket haul, going straight into the hands of Van Beek at midwicket and George Munsey (9) Fell down after a while.
But McMullen began to take control of the innings with Richie Berrington (64) heading for his second career century. The pair put on a partnership of over 150 runs, taking Scotland to 201 for four when McMullen was eventually caught by Scott Edwards off Ryan Klein.
