Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that Sanju Samson has still not realized his potential at the international level and will be disappointed if the talented batsman does not end his career as a top player.
The 28-year-old Samson has been handed another big opportunity when he was on Friday picked for the three-match ODI series to tour the West Indies next month.

The Kerala batsman’s inclusion in the squad as a wicketkeeping option also suggests that he is in the plan for the ODI World Cup to be played in India between October and November 2023.
Shastri said, “There is Sanju (Samson) who I believe has not yet realized his potential. He is a match-winner. There is something missing. If he doesn’t finish his career completely If so, I’ll be disappointed.” Week.
He said, “It’s like when I was a coach, I would have been disappointed if Rohit Sharma didn’t play in my team as a regular Test player. So, he opens the batting. I feel the same way with Sanju.” Am.”
Shastri also felt that the team could strike the right balance with the left-right combination. He wanted to see two left-handed batsmen in his top six.
“You need to strike the right balance. Do you think a left-hander will make a difference at the top? It doesn’t have to be opening, but it has to be in the top three or four. You have to consider all those options. Ideal Ideally, in the top six, I would like to see two left-handers,” he said.
The 61-year-old Shastri said the country has serious talent in the left-hander, who is ready to replace any senior player in the team.
“You have Ishan Kishan. In the wicket-keeping department, you have Sanju. But in left-handed batsmen, you have (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, Tilak Verma. The left-hander has enough talent to replace any senior player at the moment. Can take,” said the former India coach.
The former all-rounder also wanted India’s ODI team to build a pool of 15-20 young players and keep them linked with the senior team. He said there were too many injuries to the international system and it was best if India had backup strategies.
“There are a lot of young players here. Jaiswal is there and, I can miss a few here, Tilak Verma, Nehal Wadhera. There is (Sai) Sudarshan, who played very well in the (Indian Premier League 2023) final. Jitesh Sharma is Shastri said.
“Among bowlers, there is an army of young fast bowlers. There are some of them, Mukesh (Kumar), names are not coming to my mind right now. But, there are at least four or five who are ready to hit around 135 kmph. can be done.” -140 kmph mark. So I am not worried about the talent in the white ball.
You are getting a lot of injuries these days. I always like a pool of 15-20. You should always be prepared, you should have a Plan B, Plan C,” he concluded.
