Scorching heat, humidity and sudden rains-the monsoon season can wreak havoc on your skin. To combat the effects of this season, a thorough skin care routine is essential. Nourishing and moisturizing your skin becomes paramount during these wet months.

The cloudy skies and misty monsoon breeze are a refreshing change from the scorching summer weather. But even with healthier weather, skin doesn’t fare as well. As raindrops dance on the earth, filling the air with excitement, our skin is under extreme tension.

High humidity and frequent rains can make our skin dry, flaky and red. Itching and inflammation become common skin problems that we all deal with. Don’t worry, though! Amidst the rains, our skin needs extra moisture and care to stay healthy. By incorporating a few simple steps in your daily regimen, you can get hydrated and glowing skin even amid the challenges of monsoon.

Holistic wellness practitioner and founder and CEO of clean skincare brand BiE, Queenie Singh, shares her top 7 secrets to giving you monsoon skin that glows like a rain-kissed sky.

1) Hydrating internally is given less importance

Singh says, “Drinking enough water is important for maintaining healthy, hydrated skin. If you are not hydrating your body from within then it does not matter how much moisturizer you apply. Balance your skin’s natural moisture barrier and prevent dryness by aiming to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. Does it sound dull and boring? Add some citrus fruits and fresh herbs to your water to enhance the hydration, flavor and detoxification benefits.

2) Use a non-stripping cleanser

Singh explains that it’s easy to throw off your skin’s barrier balance during the monsoon season. If this is mixed with a drying cleanser or face wash, the change in humidity in the air can wreak havoc on your skin. Increased humidity means increased oiliness which leads to accumulation of sebum and clogged pores. Opt for a gentle cleanser that provides gentle hydration while cleansing, or a face wash that targets oiliness without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Look for face washes made with natural ingredients that target dirt, impurities, and pollution, like tea tree oil and activated bamboo charcoal, to rebalance and refresh your skin.

3) Exfoliate Carefully

Singh says, “Exfoliation targets dead skin cells and overall skin dullness. Gently scrubbing your skin can help refresh the dermal layers, allowing hydration and moisturizers to penetrate the skin better. However, the rainy season can make skin sensitive, so be extra gentle or choose an exfoliator with fine-grained microparticles for a non-abrasive exfoliation experience. Mild exfoliators such as roasted coffee powder, walnut powder, oatmeal, or rice bran work well when used no more than twice a week.

4) Choose a light moisturizer

Singh explains, “It is a common misconception that you can skip applying moisturizer during monsoons because of the excessive oiliness of your skin and the humidity in the air. It is essential to keep your skin hydrated so that your skin does not overproduce sebum to combat dryness. However, you can skip the heavy-duty cold cream. Don’t suffocate your skin just for the sake of softness. Switch to a feather-light, non-greasy moisturizer that provides ample hydration without being comedogenic. Moisturizers with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera or jojoba oil will keep your skin adequately nourished.

5) Use a hydrating face mist

Singh says, “Facing the rain and you forgot your umbrella? Are all of your tough layers of skin care suddenly melting away? Keep a hydrating face mist on hand to quickly replenish and hydrate your skin’s barrier before damage occurs. However, ditch the astringent toner. Try a hydrating mist made with pure, edible rose water or DIY your own. Cucumber paste is also good. Just sprinkle it on whenever you need a quick pick-me-up and you’re good to go!’

6) Protect with natural SPF

Singh explains, “The formulation of sunscreen can lead to many skin problems. Do you know what you don’t need when your skin is going through a change of seasons? SPF ingredients that are not suited for sensitive skin. Even on cloudy days, harmful UV rays can penetrate through cloudy skies and damage your skin. Choose sunblocks with a natural base to ensure you’re using the least amount of synthetic ingredients possible. A broad-spectrum sunscreen will ensure that you’re protected from both UVA and UVB rays. Blue light protection is a bonus. Mineral or physical sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide filters will do the least harm to your skin and the environment.

7) Sheet Mask to the Rescue

“Sheet masks are an excellent way to double your dose of hydration,” says Singh. Choose sheet masks that are free of artificial fragrances and added alcohol. To make sure this targeted treatment works, skip the toxic ingredients and opt for a simple blend of hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, peptides or ceramides, which encourage moisture barrier replenishment and nourishment.

Thats all there is to it! Former Miss India and holistic wellness practitioner Queenie Singh shares her 7 simple tips to keep your skin hydrated and healthy despite strong wind, harsh rain and sticky air. Focus on non-toxic ingredients, let your skin breathe, and move towards clean beauty.

Follow these guidelines carefully to enjoy the monsoon season without worrying about bad skin. Keep in mind, prevention is always better than cure, so start following these tips today and you’ll be on your way to beautiful, healthy skin all monsoon long!
