They have found phosphorus, a key element in many biological activities that brings hope for the existence of life beyond Earth.
The substance, which has been identified in frozen grains left behind by the Moon, is likely abundant in water (subsurface oceans) beneath it.

Phosphorus in grains of salt-rich ice thrown into space from Enceladus has been discovered by a multinational team of scientists led by Germany and reported in the journal Nature.
They used data from NASA’s Cassini mission, which began studying Saturn in 2004 and ended its mission in 2017 when it was destroyed in the planet’s atmosphere.

The research team examined information collected by Cassini’s Cosmic Dust Analyzer instrument when it sampled Enceladus particles frozen in Saturn’s E ring.
Scientist previously established that Enceladus’ ice grains contain a wide range of minerals and complex organic molecules, including components of amino acids associated with known forms of life.
The recent discovery is incredibly important to the field of astrobiology, according to paper co-author Christopher Glynn of the Southwest Research Institute. In samples of plume ice extracted from the subsurface ocean, they have identified a substantial presence of phosphorus.
Of the basic elements needed for biological processes, phosphorus is the least abundant and, according to NASA, has never been discovered before.

It is a component of DNA, found in the cell membranes of all living things as well as plankton that live in the ocean, and makes up chromosomes and conveys genetic data.
According to earlier analyses, Enceladus’ ice grains contained significant amounts of salt, potassium, chlorine and carbonate-containing chemicals.
