After Rohit Sharma expressed his desire to play a three-match series in the next cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) final, legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has criticized the India skipper for suggesting such a proposal. Gavaskar stressed on the importance of being mentally prepared for the big events and said that the one-off final is long overdue.
Rohit Sharma suggested this in a post-match media interaction after India lost to Australia by 209 runs in the WTC final at The Oval. The Indian captain had said that the teams should get 3 matches for the WTC finals.
Gavaskar, in an interview with India Today, responded to Rohit’s suggestion by saying that the format had already been decided. He compared it to the Indian Premier League (IPL), where teams prepare for one match instead of a best-of-three series. Gavaskar stressed on the need for mental preparation and suggested that the demand for a best-of-three series may not be feasible.

In the WTC final, Scott Boland dismissed Ravindra Jadeja and Virat Kohli in the same over to set up two back to back sets for the Men-in-Blue. India faltered in their second innings and were bowled out for 234 on the last day. The Aussies displayed superiority in all aspects of the game, while India could only blame themselves for yet another defeat in a global competition.
Team India last won an ICC title in 2013 when the MS Dhoni-led side won the Champions Trophy by winning the final against England. On the final day of the match, India added only 70 runs to their total, losing seven wickets. The disappointing performance highlighted the need for introspection and improvement for the Indian team in crucial tournaments.
