Ponniyin Selvan: Part II or PS2 only, has completed its run at the box office. The finale of Mani Ratnam’s two-part historical epic has collected Rs. 345 crores worldwide, with a domestic and international split of Rs. 215 crores and Rs. 130 crores respectively. The film is the fourth highest-grossing Kollywood film globally after 2.0, Ponniyin Selvan: Part I and Vikram, while in India it is slightly below Endheeran. In Tamil Nadu, the film is the sixth highest grosser of all time.
Despite these large numbers and being one of the highest-grossing films of all time, the PS2’s box office performance received a slow response, due to a large drop in collections compared to the PS1. In India, the film was a third shorter than the first part, while overseas it was three-quarters. Sequels of movies falling short is a common phenomenon across the world, especially when they are based on some popular source material, however in India we generally see sequels rising. Part of the reason for the growth is usually some inflationary element as sequels release after 2-3 years. Also, when the first part opens at a lower level, especially outside the home territory, as we saw with Baahubali and KGF, the viewership for the sequel is likely to increase.
In the case of Ponniyin Selvan, the first part is already performing at near capacity in the home state with no scope for growth. North India and APTS could have grown outside Tamil Nadu, which is usually the case with South Indian sequels, but reception for the first part was mixed in these places, so the film suffered a downfall here as well.
All that aside, Ponniyin Selvan: Part II is a huge money spinner, considering these numbers apart from the first part, they are absolutely bonkers results for the star cast or even the costs involved.
The regional breakup for box office collection of Ponniyin Selvan: Part II is as follows:
Tamil Nadu – Rs. 140 crores
AP/TS – Rs. 14 crores
Karnataka – Rs. 19.50 crores
Kerala – Rs. 19 crores
Rest of India – Rs. 23 crores
India – Rs. 215.50 crores
North America – $5.35 million
Middle East – $2.95 million
Malaysia – $1.90 million
Singapore – $1.25 million
Australia/New Zealand – $0.95 million
UK – $1.25 million
France – $0.55 million
Europe – $1 million
Rest of the World – $0.55 million
Foreign – $15.75 million / Rs. 130 crores
Worldwide – Rs. 345.50 crores
