The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) indirectly responded to Gill’s response through its vice-president Rajeev Shukla. Stressing on the importance of accepting the decision given by the third umpire, he urged everyone not to escalate the dispute unnecessarily. The statement indicated the board’s dissatisfaction with Gill’s public criticism.
When Cameron Green was asked about his reaction to the catch and Gill, the Australian all-rounder said that he had caught the ball cleanly. He highlighted the third umpire’s agreement with the on-field decision, supporting the legality of the catch.
The conflicting opinions expressed by Gill, the BCCI and Green have added fuel to the fire on social media platforms. While the controversy added an extra layer of drama to the WTC final, it should not overshadow the overall excellent performance by the Australian team.
Despite India’s defeat in the WTC Finals, the team has achieved tremendous success in recent years. However, they have been unable to secure an ICC trophy for a decade, their last win coming during the Champions Trophy in 2013 when MS Dhoni led the team to victory against England in the final.
