This month marks the 30th anniversary of a film that changed cinema forever. 1993’s “Jurassic Park” pioneered the use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) to bring dinosaurs to life in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the novel of the same name.
The film soon became a must-see phenomenon and audiences were awestruck by the spectacle of seeing believable dinosaurs on the big screen for the first time. “Jurassic Park” not only giant leap in special-effects filmmaking, but it paved the way for myriad later productions that included animals of all shapes and sizes.
“Jurassic Park” began in 1983 as a screenplay by Michael Crichton, whose previous film as writer and director was Westworld (1973), which featured an immersive amusement park where androids went rogue and caused havoc. That’s when it came to the attention of Steven Spielberg. By the early 1990s, Spielberg was no stranger to big-budget science-fiction filmmaking. The creatures were brought to life for cinema-goers by combining stop-motion animation with rear projection (where previously shot film is projected onto the background and actors are recorded performing in front of it). Other feature films such as “Journey to the Center of the Earth” (1959), “The Lost World” (1960) and “The Land That Time Forgot” (1974) attempted alternative methods of bringing dinosaurs to the screen, including puppetry. Of these methods, a combination of stop-motion animation for long shots and animatronic puppets for close-ups was initially chosen by Spielberg for “Jurassic Park”.

Stop-motion tests produced good results, particularly in the development of go-motion, a technique that blurs models to provide a sense of movement similar to live action. But Spielberg and his team were still willing to move forward with what was possible. Dennis Muren of the visual effects company, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), provided an alternative approach using CGI modeling and animation.
Off the back of pioneering CGI work in “The Abyss” (1989) and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1991), Muren and his team designed a test sequence of skeletal dinosaurs. Additional tests featuring a Tyrannosaurus rex with extra skin further cemented the feeling that this was the way to go for the film. This technique modeled the dinosaur from bones, additional muscles, and then finally skin.
The assembled stop-motion team seemed to have been decimated by this innovative technology. However, the model makers and animators were experts on dinosaurs and their movement, and they re-trained as computer animators to continue using their skills on production.
“Jurassic Park” features 15 minutes of on-screen dinosaurs, about nine minutes of which are Stan Winston’s animatronics and six minutes of ILM’s CGI animation. The success of this combination is visible in the iconic T. rex attack scene. In several animatronic shots, T. rex, before full-height shots convey the menace and power of the creature.
How Spielberg orchestrates the rainstorm’s atmospheric, tension building, through the initial reveal and reactions, to the prolonged attack and subsequent escape scene, takes the audience through a range of emotions. Although the CGI sections are relatively short, they have a huge impact on the overall storytelling, not to mention the credibility that the events are actually happening in front of us. It is a true representation of the power of cinema.

Upon its release, “Jurassic Park” was an immediate box office success, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time. It also presented the perfect opportunity to develop and demonstrate the latest advances in CGI. The thrill of witnessing a Gallimimus rampage, the horror of a T. rex attack, and the mystery of the Velociraptor hunt have captivated audiences around the world.
“Jurassic Park” inspired several similarly themed films, such as Disney’s “Dinosaur” (2000) and the award-winning BBC television series “Walking with Dinosaurs” (1999). But more than that, it helped spark a revolution in the use of CGI in filmmaking.
From those six minutes of animated dinosaurs, CGI has become integrated into the industry to such an extent that nearly all film and television productions feature some form of CGI practice. This can simply mean the removal and replacement of aspects of the filmed image, set extensions, adding CGI set models or animated vehicles and props, filming with green screen and compositing images, or in full CGI environments.
